Serialized storytelling is a fascinating new trend that has gained traction in recent years. The idea is simple: take a larger story and break it into smaller chunks, then release one piece at a time. Game of Thrones. This incredibly popular television show (based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series) demonstrates how well serialized storytelling works when executed properly. Even though each episode or chapter focuses on a different character or subplot, Game of Thrones never feels disjointed or confusing.
Instead, each episode pushes us forward through complex relationships between characters and plots from season to season without ever feeling like filler material exists just to fill up space between action scenes or dramatic developments.
Webcomics
There are tons of great webcomics out there, but some really stand out as excellent examples of online serials. Some popular webcomics that come to mind are XKCD, Girls with Slingshots, and Homestuck. All three have a lot of the features I like in a good serial: continuing storylines, illustrations, character development over time.
XKCD is one of my favorite comics on the internet right now; it’s been running for ten years! It’s also incredibly witty and smart, with topical humor about math, science, philosophy, or anything else you can think of. The art style changes every few strips (sometimes within the same comic), which makes it even more fun to read if you want something different from time to time.
Blog-style serials
There are many great examples of online serials, but some stand out more than others. The first example that comes to mind is The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. This show was a modernized adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and was released in a series of daily video blogs. The show was a huge success, garnering over 20 million views.
